Mitigation measures design (construction project)
The Spanish Law 42/2007 defines ‘ecological corridor’ as the area of variable size and configuration which functionally connects natural areas, of unique significance to flora or fauna that are separated, allowing genetic exchange and individual’s migration, among other ecological processes between wildlife populations.
The Law forces the government to provide, in its environmental planning and environmental management plans for natural resources, mechanisms to ensure the ecological connectivity, restoring or establishing corridors. Particularly among the protected areas of Natura 2000 network, and among those natural areas of unique significance for biodiversity.
New criteria for environmental restoration have been used, focused on creating ecological continuous corridors connecting habitats and ecosystems fragmented by a new construction stretch in Highway A-54 in the province of Lugo, North-Western Spain.
